Salaries for professionals with BMET background or education ( A.S., B.S. or DoD Military BMET ) can range widely from $41,000 to $110,00 per year. The reason for the wide range in salary is the wide range of positions a BMET can fill from BMET I to Director of the Biomedical Engineering Department ( B.S. required ) or a CT or MRI Specialist. Geographical region and experience level also plays a part. The reported starting BMET I with less than a year of experience for 2011 earned an average of about $41,000. Starting BMET II jumped to $64,000 in the survey. There appears to be considerable variation in this number during the past three years. A.S. degreed individuals can expect to start at BMET I salaries. B.S. can expect to start at BMET II salaries or better. Radiology specialists are not listed this year due to lack of data. Women appear to outperform men in some regions of the country when it comes to compensation. Overall though there appears to be a gender gap that favors men which unfortunately is typical of the rest of the job market. If you compare to last year you will see that these numbers bounce around from year to year. This is a result of the size of the sample and the varying number of people who actually volunteer information. In my opinion this survey still does a good job of reflecting the salary range and job satisfaction. Job satisfaction sits at around 91% vs a 45% job satisfaction a sited national average.

NOTE: Compensation varies considerably by region

The good news is that job openings projected by Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) outstrip supply. The BLS projects approximately 2300 replacements required per year for 2008 through 2018. The National Center for Educa31tion Statistics (NCES) results and BLS forecast appears to support anecdotal and published claims of a continuing shortage of qualified BMET’s.

I checked for program content of the M.S. and Ph.D.’s listed by the NCES in the “biomedical technology” degree category which includes BMET programs. I was not able to find any program description at Tufts that offered the degrees that could be described as having a purely technology focus. The website either did not describe such a degree or I didn’t look in the right place. Not including the M.S. and Ph.D. programs about 22% of all the BMET graduating with degrees or obtaining certificates in 2010 were women. That is an decrease of about 3 percentage points from 2009. About 19% of the B.S BMET graduates in 2010 were women that is a decrease of about 3 percentage points from 2009. 15% of the A.S. BMET graduates were women. An increase of about 3 percentage points over 2009. New this year BMET certificates/other doubled over 2009 . Women represent 39% of this group about the same as in 2009. Women continue to be attracted to this degree in unusually high percentages for an electronics focues technical field.

To get into one of the large healthcare corporations you need to have experience or an internship. The best way to get that experience is through the smaller companies that also participate in the medical device industry. I have listed below 20 of 55 companies that manufacture medical devices, sterilize medical devices, export devices to U.S., are initial distributor/importers of medical devices, manufacture medical devices, remanufacture medical devices, repack or relabel medical devices, reprocess single-use devices, or develop specifications but do not manufacture in Oklahoma. However, a quick search on Google will confirm whether that is the case. The information is provided as is in this article. In some cases the corporations may not still be located in the state indicated.

The list is a useful starting point for your job or internship search, particularly if you are interested or need to stay within your state. It can be used to determine whether there are any large medical device corporations with a presence in your state. It can also be used to find telephone numbers, addresses and websites of the smaller companies. You will need to get up the courage to call these potential contacts and introduce yourself to them. Its the only way to find out when a local company is thinking of hiring and what they are looking for. Use this approach in addition to applying over the internet.

Please contact me if you wish to obtain a complete list which has addresses or has been filtered to contain only manufacturers, remanufacturers, specification, etc. for any state. This information is available for a nominal fee. Contact Form

The graduating statistics are important to know because there has been a consistent issue described by B.S. BME graduates seeking industry jobs in their field. It’s very difficult to get one with a baccalaureate degree. The number of graduates holding that degree in 2010 hold a clue to the problem and the challenge that B.S. graduates face. The baccalaureate numbers are troublesome for the graduate because the Bureau of Labor Statistics projections for new and replacement BME jobs 2008-2018 is approximately 1500 per year.

Of course the B.S. BME graduate numbers do not reflect how many graduates had been accepted to graduate school and medical school after graduation. For example, I received a personal communication from the AAMC (American Association of Medical Colleges) reporting 573 BME graduates were accepted into medical school in 2006. Graduate school enrollment numbers also impacts the number of B.S. graduates looking for work considerably because a significant number of graduates could be enrolling into M.S. programs if the number of M.S. graduates reported in 2008 is any guide. Unfortunately a number of those M.S. and Ph.D. BME graduates would also be competing for the the BME jobs counted and projected by the BLS. Additional research and analysis would be needed to get a better estimate of the number of BME graduates actually looking for work outside the academic and medical fields. It is interesting to note that females make up approximately 37% of the B.S. graduates and the percentage increases to about 40% for M.S. degree in this cohort. These are percentages which traditional engineering ( electrical, mechanical, and chemical engineering ) programs can not match.

Harvard Biosciences and a team of international surgeons and scientists have successfully collaborated to create and implant a bioartificial trachea. The trachea was created by growing stem cells onto a spongy scaffold with appropriate physical properties. The growth phase of the process took between 10 to 12 days and included chemical or physical triggers to guide stem cell differentiation . The accomplishment was made by applying an extension of the processes originally developed and demonstrated by an international group of researchers. In this case an artificial scaffold replaced donor tissues.

Monsanto Corporation has been aggressively patenting in the Whole Animal or Part category. It can only be assumed that this is part of an overall strategy to control the market worldwide in genetically modified food products. Starting from the middle of the pack in 2006 Monsanto had increased its patents in this area ten fold by 2010. It has accumulated 765 patents in this particular category between 2006 and 2010 as an assignee. This doesn’t count any other patents in this area it may have accumulated by other means. The implications are left to the readers own particular interests. However, it is instructive to note how a corporation is actually trending in the specific patent area. The information can be used to knowledgeably focus a resume to a corporations current interests. Patents grant protection for 20 years for utility and 14 years for a design patent. So they are long term investments. It can take several years for a patent to be approved. However, a corporation will attempt to wring as much out of a patent during its life as they can.

To get into one of the large healthcare corporations you need to have experience or an internship. The best way to get that experience is through the smaller companies that also participate in the medical device industry. I have listed below 20 companies out of 245 that manufacture medical devices, sterilize medical devices, export devices to U.S., are initial distributor/importers of medical devices, manufacture medical devices, remanufacture medical devices, repack or relabel medical devices, reprocess single-use devices, or develop specifications but do not manufacture in Tennessee. This can be dated information. However, a quick search on Google will confirm whether that is the case. The information is provided as is in this article. In some cases the corporation headquarters may not still be located in the state indicated. Please contact me if you wish to obtain a list which already has addresses or has been filtered to contain only manufacturers, remanufacturers, specification, etc. for any state. The entire list is available for a nominal fee. Contact Me If You Are Interested
