IUPUI Seeks B.S. BMET Accreditation in 2009-10 Timeframe

In November 2005 the IUPUI campus of Purdue requested approval of a new B.S. Biomedical Engineering Technology program.  In addition it requested the change of name for its long standing A.S. Biomedical Electronics Technology program to A.S. Biomedical Engineering Technology.  This application followed on the heels of a long developing realization by the program that the BMET career field was rapidly evolving in increasing complexity and depth.  It was also undoubtedly influenced by the entry of the DeVry University B.S. BMET program which I introduced and lead for three and a half years.  A number of these programs were accredited in 2007.  If the IUPUI accreditation process is on track the B.S. BMET should be accredited this year or early next.

The addition of the IUPUI B.S. BMET program is another indication of the continuing and increasing need for engineering level technical expertise at the application end of the spectrum for the increasingly complex medical devices and healthcare delivery systems.  The new accredited B.S. BMET program will provide welcome competition.  I expect this addition will help spur reevaluation of current A.S. BMET programs and lead to higher levels of quality education in all the current BMET programs.

If you are getting impatient of waiting for the right job to fall into your lap it may be time to get down to the hard work of cold calling for jobs. This approach is probably one of the most daunting methods for engineers to search for jobs. None of their education, experience or training typically prepares them for this very common sales practice. I have provided some links with “how to” instructions below. Here is what I would do and what I keep in mind as I do it. You can embellish it as you wish or find another approach on the web to gain a better feel for the approach.

1.Prepare a introductory script and practice it out loud until it is second nature. Use the links above to get an idea about what you should say.

2.Once you find the web page for the hospital below  you need to find the main telephone number of the facility.

3.Call and ask the operator for the Biomedical Engineering Department or the Clinical Engineering Department. Once you get to the appropriate department ask to talk to the manager.

4.Your first goal is to introduce yourself with the short memorized script you have created earlier. Don’t read it. Just say it in a conversational tone. Don’t worry if you miss something. The hiring manager doesn’t know the script.

5. After the introductory pleasantries ask whether they have or are going to have any jobs openings.

6. If you can’t get to the hiring manager immediately use their voicemail. See link above for some techniques.

7. If there are no job openings you can ask for an information interview to find out more about the job. See links above for more details on this type of interview. This provides you with a further chance to get to know the hiring manager and get more leads on potential jobs. At the end of the interview ask if they know if anyone else is hiring or planning to hire in the area.

8. Remember in addition to trying to get a job you are also creating a network so always treat the manager or person you are talking to as if they are going to be your boss even if they are negative on every question you ask. Don’t show your frustration on the telephone.

9. End the call professionally and ask if you can call back in an appropriate amount of time. The amount of time depends on what you learned about the departments hiring plans and history.

To get into one of the large healthcare corporations you need to have experience or an internship. The best way to get that experience is through the smaller companies that also participate in the medical device industry. I have listed below a sample of the companies and individuals that manufacture medical devices, sterilize medical devices, export devices to U.S., are initial distributor/importers of medical devices, manufacture medical devices, remanufacture medical devices, repack or relabel medical devices, reprocess single-use devices, or develop specifications but do not manufacture in Montana.  This can be dated information. However, a quick search on Google will confirm whether that is the case. The information is provided as is in this article. In some cases the corporation headquarters may not still be located in the state indicated.

The list is a useful starting point for your job or internship search, particularly if you are interested or need to stay within your state. It can be used to determine whether there are any large medical device corporations with a presence in your state. It can also be used to find telephone numbers, addresses and websites of the smaller companies. You will need to get up the courage to call these potential contacts and introduce yourself to them. Its the only way to find out when a local company is thinking of hiring and what they are looking for.
